An astigmatism is an irregularity in the curvature of the cornea. This causes images to be distorted and makes a blur. Most astigmatism can be corrected with spectacles or contact lenses. In the past, cataract surgery was performed without fixing the pre-existing astigmatism and people were required to wear spectacles or contact lenses after cataract surgery in order to see more clearly. A toric intraocular lens is a modification of a standard intraocular lens (used in almost all cataract surgery) that has the needed astigmatism correction built into the lens. It is ordered specifically for the degree of astigmatism to be corrected and it does a good job at correcting astigmatism and allow the patient to be less dependent on spectacles. These lenses come with additional charge for the purchase of the toric lens and for the proper implantation by the ophthalmologist.
Cataract surgery is one of the most effective forms of refractive surgery, because the new lens implant can correct just about any degree of myopia (short sightedness) and hyperopia (farsightedness) at the time of surgery. The highly myopic or presbyopic patients are often the happiest, because a lifetime of refractive errors can finally be cured with successful cataract surgery.
A common question asked is whether cataract surgery can be performed after LASIK. In fact, cataract surgery can be performed after any type of laser vision correction procedure, including LASIK, PRK, Epi-LASIK and LASEK. LASIK and other types of laser vision correction alter the curvature of the front surface of the eye (cornea). Therefore it's helpful if you can give your cataract surgeon the records of your eye exams that were performed prior to your laser procedure. Cataract surgery can be successfully performed without these pre-LASIK records. But they can give your cataract surgeon additional information to determine the best intraocular lens (IOL) power for an optimal visual outcome after your cataract surgery.
